POET LAUREATE<\/h1>\n

Peter Albert Todd<\/strong> was named Poet Laureate of the City of Gloucester, Massachusetts, in August, 2014.\u00a0 Peter died during his term as laureate, on December 15, 2015. \u00a0The seventy-two year old Gloucester native had written poems for the city’s World War II Memorial and for the Fishermen’s Wives Memorial and other monuments and many events in the city. A self-taught poet, Todd wrote “on demand” for individuals and events.\u00a0 Also prolific, with over 800 poems to his credit, Todd was often inspired to write on placemats and other handy materials.\u00a0 Mr.\u00a0 Todd’s website is: thepoetryofpeteralberttodd.weebly.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ruthanne (Rufus) Collinson<\/strong> is the outgoing Poet Laureate of the City of Gloucester.\u00a0 Her energetic work in schools, at the Writer’s Center, and in other venues was a model of the role of Poet Laureate.<\/p>\n

When she was named to the post, former Mayor Bruce Tobey praised her poetry’s\u00a0 “Craftsmanship and precision…really wonderful.\u00a0 I saw it and felt it.” Collinson grew up in a Concord Street neighborhood where she was the only girl, and once worked as a reporter for the Gloucester Daily Times, started writing plays as an 8-year-old and penned her first poem at the age of 9.\u00a0 She now lives downtown near the Fort.<\/p>\n

Rufus\u00a0replaced John J. Ronan<\/strong> as Poet Laureate.\u00a0 “Rufus put her mark on the position,” Ronan said in an interview.\u00a0 “She did\u00a0 a wonderful job and brought honor to the city and the post of Poet Laureate.”<\/p>\n

In an editorial published in July, 2008, in the Gloucester Daily Times <\/em>and in the Cape Ann Beacon, <\/em>Mr. Ronan vowed to make “poetry a public commodity” in Gloucester and laid out four specific goals:<\/p>\n

–<\/strong>\u00a0 to found a Poet Laureate Scholarship for a graduating Gloucester High School senior who has shown ability and interest poetry<\/p>\n

–\u00a0<\/strong> to reach into the schools at all levels so that poets can be available to teachers to talk about and to read poetry with s<\/a>tudents \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Don’t imitate other poets. Vincent Ferrini<\/strong> was the city’s first poet laureate.\u00a0 The honorary post was created in Gloucester in 1998 after Councilors John Foote and Dean Harrison created the position for him, capping his half-century of literary achievement. <\/a> Mr. Ferrini died Dec. 24, 2008.\u00a0 He was 94.\u00a0 A summary of Mr. Ferrini’s distinguished career in poetry is available at:\u00a0 http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vincent_Ferrini<\/a>.<\/p>\n

G<\/strong>LOUCESTER POETS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many fine poets live and write in the city of Gloucester and their poems have been widely published, helping to maintain Cape Ann’s reputation as an important artistic center.\u00a0 A central purpose of Gloucester Poet Laureate is to promote and distribute worldwide the names and poems of the city’s artists and to help build their reputations and the reputation of Gloucester in the age of cyber space.\u00a0 The pages here are dedicated to professional poets, those published artists long committed to the craft, and also to non-professional poets, citizens who have written for special occasions and express part of the core identity of Gloucester in their work.\u00a0 (This website is under continued construction; watch for future additions.)<\/p>\n

Anne Babson Carter<\/a><\/strong>, winner of the prestigious Four Way Book Prize for Strike Root,<\/em> lives and writes in Gloucester.<\/p>\n

P<\/strong>at Lowery Collins<\/strong><\/a>, an accomplished poet, painter and novelist, has won national and regional honors for her work.\u00a0 She lives and works in Gloucester.<\/p>\n

Ruthanne (Rufus) Collinson<\/a><\/strong> has worn many occupational hats, but the most consistent through the decades has been that of poet.\u00a0 She lives in central Gloucester and often uses the city as a theme in her work.<\/p>\n

Joseph Featherstone<\/a><\/strong> and his family have lived in Gloucester — part-time or full-time — for almost fifty years.\u00a0 His love for the city, especially East Gloucester, is reflected in his poetry collection titled Brace’s Cove.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Fishermen’s Wives Memorial Poetry Contest<\/a><\/strong>, held in the spring of 2010, was a competition for Gloucester residents to honor the Fishermen’s Wives Memorial, including the statue by Morgan Faulds Pike.\u00a0 The contest was a success with dozens of poets entering finely crafted work.\u00a0 The winner was Diane Giardi for her poem, “The Fishermen’s Wives.”\u00a0 Her poem appears on the Fishermen’s Wives page, along with the poems of the runners-up: Wayne Soini, Nancy LeGendre, and Douglas Goldman.<\/p>\n

New Poets<\/a>\u00a0 <\/strong>Gloucester Daily Times <\/em>and Beacon\u00a0<\/em>columns have frequently announced the expansion and re-formatting of this website.\u00a0 In response to invitations for fresh poetry, many Gloucester and Cape Ann poets responded.\u00a0 Poets chosen to have their work presented here are: Fred Andrews, Larry Brooks, K.W. Erickson, Lisa Manning, Lydia Priest, Bradley Smith and Mary Pat Butterfield.<\/p>\n

The Quarterdeck Poetry Contest<\/strong><\/a>, held in the summer of 2009, was a competition for Gloucester residents to honor the iconic The Man at the Wheel statue on the city’s waterfront.\u00a0for a Massachusetts quarter.\u00a0 The winner was Pamela Mansfield, for her poem, “Verdigris – The Man at the Wheel.”\u00a0 Her poem appears on the Quarterdeck page, along with the poems of the runners-up: Amber Gailitis, Neal Kleindienst, and Lydia Priest.<\/p>\n

John J. Ronan<\/a><\/strong> has published widely and won national honors for his poetry, including being named a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow.\u00a0 His recent books include Marrowbone Lane (<\/em>Backwaters\/Univ. of Nebraska, 2009) <\/em>and Taking the Train of Singularity South from Midtown <\/em>(Backwaters\/Univ. of Nebraska, 2017).<\/p>\n

Stephen Scotti<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>was a renowned composer and musician and singer who also wrote poetry.\u00a0 A resident of Gloucester for many years, he is especially known for his work setting American and Irish poems to music.<\/p>\n

Seascape Poems<\/strong> <\/a>are important to a community that depends on the ocean for industry, art and leisure.\u00a0 The poets included here range from Rose DiMaria, whose father and husband were fishermen, to T. S. Eliot, whose Dry Salvages <\/em>is about that shelf of rock off Cape Ann.<\/p>\n

Nancy Seidman<\/a><\/strong> was a frequent visitor to Cape Ann where her daughter, Kate Seidman, lives.<\/p>\n

Peter Todd<\/strong><\/a>, a Gloucester native, was a self-taught poet.\u00a0 He read often at functions in Gloucester, describing how his own background was entwined with the city’s.<\/p>\n

Frances Wosmek<\/a><\/strong> is a writer of children’s books and a poet.\u00a0 She has won many national honors for her work and is vibrant and creative in her 90’s.\u00a0 Frances lives in the Magnolia neighborhood of Gloucester.<\/p>\n

HISTORY<\/h1>\n

Vincent Ferrini was preceded by a long tradition of poetry in his adopted city.\u00a0 His friend and colleague, Charles Olson<\/a>, began his American-Gloucester epic, The Maximus Poems, <\/em>in 1950 and the the work, though unfinished as his death in 1970, has gained worldwide recognition.\u00a0 Other twentieth century poets who lived in or wrote of Gloucester included Herb Kenny, Percy MacKaye, Kitty Parsons, and Lora Clark. Earlier, at the turn of the twentieth century and in the nineteenth, the list of writers included Lucy Larcom, Clarence Falt, Elizabeth Phelps, and Hiram Rich.\u00a0 Probably the most famous poet to write about Gloucester remains Henry Wadsworth Longfellow for his ballad, The Wreck of the Hesperus.<\/a><\/em> This is a very short list of Gloucester poets, or poets writing about Gloucester.\u00a0 A full list of poets or other writers inspired by Gloucester might stretch to T.S. Eliot, Rudyard Kipling, and even H.P. Lovecraft, but that is beyond the scope of this website.\u00a0 The links below will help in researching Gloucester poetry and poets.<\/p>\n
