Wheelman<\/strong><\/p>\n

I watch you as you stare out to sea,<\/p>\n

Looking for your fellow fishermen who have gone the way of the fish<\/p>\n

They sought.<\/p>\n

I wonder what you really see;<\/p>\n

Do you see your comrades’ remains after they died?<\/p>\n

Or do you see their Spirits as they wander the other side, do you see the fishing boats sinking?<\/p>\n

Do you commune with the bodies they left to the tides?<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Or with their Spirits on the other side?<\/p>\n

Poseidon takes what is his and leaves the rest to feed his fish.<\/p>\n

Just what is that you see out there, as you persist in your constant stare?<\/p>\n

Perhaps you stand to watch and warn the fishers out at sea,<\/p>\n

Guiding them home so that they can come ashore once more, free to be!<\/p>\n

Oh, mysterious wheelman what do you see?<\/p>\n

If I ask enough times will you really tell me?<\/p>\n

I see what is happening now to your comrades and I weep.<\/p>\n

Do you se that, too?<\/p>\n

White Lace<\/strong><\/p>\n

Frozen white lace drifts by my window, falling from the sky.<\/p>\n

How pleasing the white lace is to the eye,<\/p>\n

As it softly covers the earth covering the dirty ground below.<\/p>\n

Now that I am old and have no particular place to go, frozen white lace is a beautiful wonder I know<\/p>\n

But when I was young and had places to go,<\/p>\n

Well then I just called it snow! <\/span><\/p>\n

Harbingers<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I awaken to the sound of a seagull’s cry as it makes its way across the sky,<\/p>\n

And pushing through the sodden earth crocuses struggle for all they’re worth<\/p>\n

To break the winter crust of the earth.<\/p>\n

All early signs that soon the days of spring will abound<\/p>\n

Here in ancient Gloucester Towne.<\/p>\n

So we will begin the dance of spring as other birds begin to sing,<\/p>\n

Soon outlined against the clear blue sky, sails will also spread their wings<\/p>\n

And the harbor once again will be filled with signs of life<\/p>\n

For those of us in Gloucester Towne<\/p>\n

Old and young will smile as sunlight mild shines on us and we again enjoy the joyful things<\/p>\n

That are the harbingers of a Gloucester spring.<\/p>\n

Matrimony: An Epithalamion<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let us accept that whatever we so soundly say<\/p>\n

in verse today may be freely used against us.<\/p>\n

All the syllables are untrue stanza by stanza<\/p>\n

but in this purest form may be assume as true love.<\/p>\n

Let us be aware as we enter into this unholy matrimony<\/p>\n

that we make a commitment to play the mind games<\/p>\n

changing the rules when they betray us<\/p>\n

and realize it’s not if we dis or honor the rhyme<\/p>\n

but how we obey the meter.<\/p>\n

As the authors of this wordy poetic event<\/p>\n

rings of linguistic ornaments\/metaphorically speaking<\/p>\n

let us respectfully\/individually communicate to them sitting<\/p>\n

Descending west an emblem of what’s done,<\/p>\n

Six decades passage to this farther side,<\/p>\n

So many increments through seasons run<\/p>\n

Seem now to blend and form one rising tide;<\/p>\n

A world stripped down to elements – brushed blue<\/p>\n

in weightless clarity compelling<\/p>\n

wave and cloud to undulate around<\/p>\n

a brace of boys forever borne<\/p>\n

Some say this light is unlike any other,<\/p>\n

granite headland hues of pink and gray<\/p>\n

infusing blue and white and slate,<\/p>\n

but restless summer rarely stays for long,<\/p>\n

nomadic spirits in fair weather rolling<\/p>\n

over islands seeming much the same<\/p>\n

illuminate a moment and are gone,<\/p>\n

and in their wake ghost strokes hold fast<\/p>\n

an evanescent voyage without end<\/p>\n

It has a way to make you sad,<\/p>\n

to make you happy, friendly, mad,<\/p>\n

Near Cripple Cove, a dragger’s engine revs up,<\/p>\n

beyond my smell,<\/p>\n

herring gulls following in her wake,<\/p>\n

screaming, hoping for fish guts thrown behind.<\/p>\n

Closer, I see cormorants dip under the waves,<\/p>\n

pop up farther away, fishing too.<\/p>\n

I breathe in the salty, bracing air,<\/p>\n

whiff of old gurry from wharf-tied fishing boats.<\/p>\n

Cripple Cove is lop-sided too, but, like me,<\/p>\n

in the gated playground near to me,<\/p>\n

piping voices mingling with the gulls,<\/p>\n

parents giving deeper counter-point.<\/p>\n

I remember another cove down south,<\/p>\n

in the humid air, a saltier smell,<\/p>\n

Clearer, greener seas, strange colored fish,<\/p>\n

and shrimp boats at work, with shrimpy smells-<\/p>\n

but Gloucester, Massachusetts, is my home.<\/p>\n

I’ve heard of other coves,<\/p>\n

Desolate and bleak, pollution rife,<\/p>\n

Abandoned boats and shacks,<\/p>\n

And all birds gone. I ask,<\/p>\n

“How can this happen, God?<\/p>\n

Are you in all things, here and there?<\/p>\n

And in the dying fish as well?”<\/p>\n

The Power of Now<\/strong><\/p>\n

“it is what it is”<\/p>\n

It’s a vacuous saw from long ago, I used to feel.<\/p>\n

I had gritted teeth when people used it on voiced grief or pain.<\/p>\n

But now, I wonder. A luminescent glow<\/p>\n

of many hues of green of trees and grass,<\/p>\n

amid the grey rocks and hurling seas<\/p>\n

of white of omnipresent snow, when blizzards howling pass and go<\/p>\n

(The blizzard stuff’s what it is, right\u00a0now.)<\/p>\n

and it’s all allowed, say presumptuous I,<\/p>\n

whatever seasons bring, snow, rain, ice or wind,<\/p>\n

as long as cozy shelter holds, and spring holds hope.<\/p>\n

“It is what it is.”<\/p>\n

So prayers for those whose “now” holds no hope.<\/p>\n

Such as they, in dark places all, are isolated ant alone.<\/p>\n

May those whose help works for them,<\/p>\n

be with those folk in a most effective mode.<\/p>\n

“It is what it is,”<\/p>\n

may then reflect, in an off-beat, askew<\/p>\n

way God’s glint within, beyond,<\/p>\n
